Website redesign: a new site, the same Google rankings

The short answer: a website redesign does not have to cost you traffic if you map your current URLs, move the content that ranks and set a 301 redirect for every page. We build the new site in Next.js from EUR 2,500 plus EUR 85 a month and give a fixed price within 24 hours.

Most redesigns go wrong the same way. The new site looks better, but two weeks after launch the traffic from Google has dropped and the phone rings less. The cause is rarely the design. It is that old addresses now return an error page, that well-ranking copy has been cut, or that page titles have been replaced with generic headings. A redesign is as much a moving project as a design project, and that is the part we plan first.

How do you keep your Google rankings during a redesign?

  1. SEO audit of the old site: we pull every URL, the pages that get Google traffic, the keywords they rank for and the pages others link to
  2. Content plan: for each page we decide whether to keep it, improve it, merge it with another or remove it
  3. Redirect map: every old URL gets a 301 redirect to the most relevant new page, never just to the homepage
  4. Technical SEO on the new site: titles, meta descriptions, headings, structured data and hreflang are carried over or improved
  5. Follow-up after launch: a new sitemap, Search Console and fixing the errors that appear in the first weeks

The redirect map is the single most important document in the project. A 301 redirect tells Google that a page has moved permanently, so the value of its links and history comes along. Without it, the new site effectively starts from zero.

Moving from WordPress or Wix to Next.js

Old site on WordPress or Wix

  • A theme or template that limits the design
  • Speed depends on plugins and apps
  • Booking and payments via third-party add-ons
  • Hard to move when the platform owns the structure

New site in Next.js

  • Design built from scratch for your business
  • Fast pages rendered on the server
  • Integrations written straight into the solution
  • You own the code and data and can take them with you
Why many use the redesign to switch platform as well.

Wix makes planning especially important, because the URL structure is often dictated by the platform and content does not export cleanly. We move copy and images by hand or with scripts, depending on the volume, and make sure everything gets a new address that makes sense. Read more about the platform on Next.js agency.

Launch-day checklist

We go through the list with you before the domain switches.

A Friday afternoon is a bad time to launch. The domain switch is planned for a time when both we and your contact person are available, and the old site is kept ready until the new one has run smoothly. If something still misbehaves, we can fix it the same day, because hosting and support are already with us in the monthly plan.

How much does a website redesign cost?

The new site is built in our web packages: EUR 2,500 plus EUR 85 a month for Small, EUR 5,000 plus EUR 125 for Medium and EUR 7,500 plus EUR 165 for Large, with hosting, updates, support and backups in the monthly plan. The SEO audit, redirect map and content migration depend on how many pages you have, and are set as a fixed price in the written proposal within 24 hours. For comparison, typical market ranges in Denmark are 15.000–40.000 kr for a standard agency site and 50.000–150.000 kr or more for a custom build. The full picture is in how much does a website cost, and the packages are on pricing.

A redesign often starts with the brand

Sometimes it is not the website that is dated but the identity behind it. For Imbro, a property investor in Aarhus, we developed the brand identity that everything else then builds on. For Vaskekonerne we went the other way: the website became part of eight solutions in one circuit with booking and operations, so the new site did not just look better but also made the work behind the scenes easier.

What our clients say

We have worked with Ceptiv on several of our digital offerings, and they have become a natural part of the team. They move fast, turning ideas into new designs and clickable prototypes quickly, so we can test with customers early instead of debating on paper.

FAQ

FAQ: website redesign

Will we lose traffic with a new website?
Not if the move is properly planned. Small swings in the first weeks are normal while Google re-indexes the site. Big drops are almost always caused by missing 301 redirects, removed content or changed titles. With an SEO audit beforehand, a complete redirect map and Search Console follow-up after launch, most sites keep their rankings and often improve them over time.
What is a 301 redirect?
A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from an old web address to a new one. When a user or Google visits the old URL, they are sent on automatically. It also tells Google the page has moved for good, so the value of its links and history carries over. Every old page should point to the most relevant new page, not just the homepage.
What does a new website cost with you?
The web packages cost EUR 2,500, EUR 5,000 or EUR 7,500 one-time plus EUR 85, EUR 125 or EUR 165 a month for hosting, updates, support and backups. They include 12, 24 or 36 features and 1, 2 or 3 integrations. The SEO audit and content migration are priced by number of pages and set as a fixed price in the written proposal within 24 hours.
Can you move our site from Wix or WordPress?
Yes. We move copy, images and relevant data to a new site built in Next.js, and set redirects from the old addresses. We do not build on WordPress or page builders, so the new site is written from scratch. Wix takes a little more manual work, because content does not always export cleanly, but the outcome is the same.
Do we need new copy for the new site?
Not necessarily. Copy that ranks well and converts should usually be kept or only carefully improved. Copy that brings no traffic or enquiries is a good place to start over. The SEO audit shows which pages are which, so you spend effort where it matters and do not risk cutting away what already works.
Who owns the new website?
You do. You own the code, content and data. The monthly plan can be cancelled with 30 days’ notice, and you can take the code to another supplier. Cancelling within the first 15 months carries a one-time fee that depends on the package. The domain should always be registered in your name.
