Kirppu is a flea market supermarket: you rent a stand, put up your things and Kirppu sells them for you. When the chain was one store in Herlev with plans for all of Denmark, we designed the booking system and customer panel that let renters do everything themselves.
Everything on this page works. Book a stand, extend a rental and make a label.

The starting point
One store in Herlev. A plan for all of Denmark.
In 2015 Kirppu had a single store and a clear ambition: open across the country. That only works if renters can find a free stand, book it, extend it and buy services without calling a store. Kirppu needed a customer panel that could carry the growth.

Our role
The only UX/UI designer, in a leading role.
Kirppu had a small team and an early wireframe prototype. We were brought in to improve its UX and UI, and ended up with full responsibility for the experience from first click to finished design.
The complete prototype
We took the existing wireframes and turned them into one complete, clickable prototype of every step and state.
The UI design
Every screen of the booking flow and the customer panel, from the date picker to the receipt.
The user test
We planned and ran the tests with real renters and turned the findings into design changes.
The method
Basics first. Big ideas in the next generation.
Kirppu’s customers wanted a quick solution, so we worked MVP-first: the features renters could not live without went into version one, and the bigger ideas were parked for the next generation. After release, we ran a UX analysis to decide what came next.

The booking system
From “I want a stand” to booked, in four steps.
Choose a store, choose a period, add what you need and fill in your details. The receipt on the right updates with every click, so the price is never a surprise. Try it.

Vælg butik
Her kan du vælge, i hvilken butik du ønsker at booke din stand. Klik på en butik for at vælge.
Type af stand
One decision per step
Store, period, add-ons and details. Never more than one thing to decide at a time.
A calendar that says no
Booked days are red and cannot be chosen, so renters never book a period that is not free.
Long-term offers
Four, eight or twelve weeks with the saving shown up front. Longer rentals, without a sales pitch.
A live receipt
Store, dates, discounts and add-ons summed up as you go, with the total always in sight.
From wireframe to UI
Same structure. A lot more clarity.
We kept what worked in the original wireframe prototype and redesigned the rest: clear steps, a date picker with availability, visible offers and a receipt that explains the price. Drag to compare.
MitKirppu · the customer panel
Your stands, your sales and your money, in one place.
Once the stand is booked, MitKirppu takes over. Renters follow today’s sales, see how far into the rental they are, extend with one click and request their payout. Click around.

Balance up front
Today’s sales and the amount owed to you are the first things you see.
The rental as a timeline
A progress bar shows how far into the period you are, and how far it can be extended.
Extend in one click
Ready-made offers with a discount, or pick a new end date in the calendar.
Services on the side
Shelves, clean-up and extra labels go into the same basket as the extension.
The next generation · 2020
The label maker: price tags from your phone.
The UX analysis after release showed where renters spent their time: writing price labels by hand at the store. So the next generation got a mobile-first label maker. Take a photo, write a short description, set the price and the label is ready to print when you arrive.

Printed label
The label updates while you type. Stand number, description, price and a barcode the checkout can scan.
Mobile first
Designed for one hand, in the living room, while you sort through the boxes.
Max 50 characters
The counter keeps descriptions short enough to fit the label and still say what it is.
New and printed
Labels waiting to be printed are kept apart from the ones already on the stand.
Copy between stands
Moving to a new stand? Copy your labels over instead of typing them again.
User test and UX analysis
What renters told us, and what we changed.
We tested the prototype with real renters before launch and analysed how the MVP was used after release. Every finding became a concrete change.
We found
Renters picked dates first and only then discovered that the stand was taken.
We changed
Booked days are shown in red in the date picker and cannot be selected.
We found
The price for longer rentals was a surprise at checkout.
We changed
Long-term offers with the saving in percent, right next to the calendar.
We found
Returning renters had to type all their details again.
We changed
A “Already a customer?” login right inside step four fills in the form.
We found
Nobody knew how long their rental had left, or whether it could be extended.
We changed
The rental period as a progress bar, with a tooltip showing how far it can be extended.
We found
Add-ons were hidden in text, so hardly anyone bought them.
We changed
A clear table with price, total and an info button, added with one click.
We found
Writing price labels by hand at the store took a long time.
We changed
The next generation: a mobile label maker that prints the labels for you.
What the client says
When we started working with Ceptiv, Kirppu was one store in Herlev and a lot of ambition. We needed a booking system our renters could use without calling us, and we needed it fast. Ceptiv took charge of the whole experience, from the prototype and the design to testing it with real renters, and they were honest about what belonged in the first version and what could wait. That focus got us live quickly, and the platform has grown with us to more than 30 stores. Today our renters book, extend and manage their stands themselves, and that is a big part of why we could grow the way we did.
