AI website builder vs web designer: when is AI enough?

In short: an AI website builder like Wix, Framer or Squarespace is enough when you need a simple brochure site with a few pages, no integrations and a small budget. As soon as the site has to win customers through Google, take bookings, talk to your accounting system or meet accessibility law, a web designer or an agency pays for itself. This guide gives you an honest comparison, a three-year cost calculation and a checklist for the decision.

A master carpenter types three lines into Wix’s AI assistant: “carpenter in Roskilde, roofing and renovation, 6 staff”. Three minutes later there is a website with photos of smiling tradespeople, a blue button and copy about “a passion for quality”. It feels like magic. Three weeks later he has spent four evenings moving images around, the site does not show up in Google for “carpenter Roskilde”, and the contact form sends emails to an inbox nobody checks. We hear that story often, and it is the reason for this guide.

AI website builders have become genuinely good at producing something that looks finished. That is a big step forward for new businesses on a small budget. The question is what the website has to do for your business. A site that simply confirms you exist is something else entirely from a site that has to bring in ten enquiries a month, take bookings and send data to your accounting system.

What can an AI website builder do in 2026?

  • Generate a complete first draft with pages, layout, colours and copy from a short description.
  • Suggest stock photos and generate illustrations.
  • Write and rewrite copy in different tones and languages.
  • Produce a site that adapts automatically to mobile, tablet and desktop.
  • Offer ready-made modules for contact forms, a blog, a simple shop and newsletters.
  • Handle hosting, SSL certificate and security updates of the platform itself.

It is an impressive list, and for a simple brochure site it is often enough. The limits show when the site has to be part of the business. The AI does not know your customers, your competitors or the questions people ask before they buy. It guesses at a structure that resembles a thousand other sites. Integrations with Danish systems such as e-conomic, Dinero, MobilePay or your booking calendar are rarely built in, and you are tied to the platform’s way of doing things.

AI website builder vs web designer: what is the difference?

AI website builder

  • First draft in minutes
  • Low start price and a fixed monthly subscription
  • Structure and copy built on generic patterns
  • Limited to the platform’s modules and apps
  • You spend the hours on adjustments yourselves

Web designer or agency

  • Starts with your goals, customers and competitors
  • Structure and copy built to convert and rank
  • Integrations with booking, payments and accounting
  • Accessibility, speed and SEO as part of the delivery
  • Higher start price, less of your own time
Two routes to a new website.

Typical Danish market ranges in 2026. AI builder subscriptions vary by plan and add-ons, and your own time is not included.

If you want the full picture of designer pricing, we have written a guide to what a web designer costs. It covers hourly rates, project prices and the hidden costs that often surface after launch.

When is an AI website builder enough?

  • You are newly started and mainly need to show that you exist, with contact details and a short description.
  • Customers come through your network, referrals or social media and use the site to check you out.
  • The site has fewer than ten pages and does not need to connect to other systems.
  • You have the time and the appetite to write copy and maintain the site yourselves.
  • Your budget is under DKK 5,000 and you need something online this week.
  • You are a micro-enterprise that is exempt from the accessibility act’s service requirements.

When should you hire a web designer or an agency?

  • The website has to win new customers through Google, and you compete with others in your area.
  • Customers need to book, pay or order directly on the site.
  • Data has to flow to e-conomic, Dinero, your CRM or calendar without manual work.
  • You sell to consumers online and are covered by the accessibility act.
  • The brand is part of the product, and you want to stand out from the templates.
  • You need several languages, a customer portal or a logged-in area.

Accessibility, cookies and SEO need more than AI

Since 28 June 2025 the European Accessibility Act has applied in Denmark to e-commerce and other consumer services. Micro-enterprises with fewer than 10 employees and turnover or balance sheet of no more than EUR 2 million are exempt from the service requirements, but everyone else should in practice aim for WCAG 2.1 AA. AI builders rarely produce correct alt text, heading structure and contrast on their own. Read our guide to the accessibility act for websites, and check the details with Sikkerhedsstyrelsen or a lawyer. The same goes for cookies: rejecting must be as easy as accepting.

SEO is the other big difference. A site ranks on structure, speed and content that answers exactly what people search for. That takes keyword research, a page per service and area, good titles and descriptions and a fast site that passes Core Web Vitals. We have collected it all in our guide to an SEO-friendly website.

What does an AI website cost over three years compared with a web designer?

Worked example for a trades business with 6 staff. Own time is valued at DKK 500 an hour, because it is time that could otherwise be billed.

ItemAI builderCeptiv Small package
Set-upDKK 0DKK 18,000
Subscription or plan for 36 monthsabout DKK 9,000 at DKK 250/monthDKK 21,600 at DKK 600/month
Own time for set-up and copy30 hours, about DKK 15,0006 hours, about DKK 3,000
Own time for upkeep2 hours/month, about DKK 36,000Covered by the plan
Booking or accounting integrationAdd-on apps, if available1 integration included
Total over three yearsabout DKK 60,000about DKK 42,600

The example is deliberately simple, and your numbers will differ. The point is that the AI builder is only cheapest as long as your own time is free. For an owner who can bill their hours, it is often the other way round. And then there is what the table does not show: the difference in enquiries. If a professionally built site brings just one extra job a month, the sum is settled. To compare more platforms over time, read website builder vs agency.

Which myths about AI websites should you know?

  • Myth: “AI writes copy that sells.” AI writes copy that sounds right. Selling takes your concrete prices, guarantees and experience.
  • Myth: “The site is done when the AI is done.” The first draft is the start. Most people spend many hours correcting it.
  • Myth: “Responsive means it works on mobile.” The layout adapts, but buttons, forms and images still have to be tested on real phones.
  • Myth: “The platform handles SEO.” The platform gives you the fields. Content, structure and keywords are your job.
  • Myth: “A web designer is always expensive.” A simple professional site can cost less than your own hours on an AI site.

How do you get started the right way?

1

Define the goal

How many enquiries, bookings or sales should the site bring in each month?

2

Write the core content

Services, prices, area, experience and the five questions customers always ask.

3

Test an AI builder

Use a free trial with your own content, and note what is missing.

4

Get a fixed quote

Compare with a quote from a designer or agency on the same content.

5

Decide on a three-year view

Add up subscription, operations and your own time, and choose based on the goal.

Five steps, whether you end up with AI or a professional.

Checklist: what should you settle before you choose?

  1. Is the domain registered in the company’s own name?
  2. Can the site take the enquiries, bookings or payments you need?
  3. Which systems must the site talk to, and does the integration exist?
  4. Are you covered by the accessibility act, and who ensures WCAG 2.1 AA?
  5. Who writes the copy, and who updates it every quarter?
  6. What does the solution cost in total over three years, including your own time?
  7. What happens to the site and content if you want to change platform?
  8. How will you measure whether the site works: enquiries, calls or bookings?

Questions about AI websites

Can Google tell that a website was made with AI?
Google judges content on quality and usefulness, however it was made. The problem with many AI-generated sites is that the copy turns generic: the same phrases, no concrete prices, no experience and nothing that sets you apart from a competitor. That kind of content struggles to rank. Use AI for a first draft by all means, but write the sections about your services, prices, areas and experience yourself. Those are what customers and search engines look for.
Can I move my AI website to another platform later?
Usually only partly. Text and images can be copied, but design, layout and features are tied to the platform. In practice a switch means a new website. You can always take the domain with you if it is registered in your own name, so make sure of that from the start. Also plan redirects of old addresses when you switch, so you keep the Google rankings the site has built up.
What is the best AI website builder for a small business?
It depends on what matters most to you. Wix has many ready-made features and apps. Squarespace is strong on attractive templates for creative trades. Framer gives designers a lot of freedom and fast pages. Webflow is the most flexible but takes more learning. Try two of them with your own copy during a free trial, and check in particular whether you get the language, cookie banner, contact form and integrations you need without buying extra apps.
Do web designers use AI too?
Yes, most do in 2026. Professionals use AI for research, copy drafts, image editing, code suggestions and testing. The difference lies in what happens around the tool: a designer understands your customers, prioritises content by what sells, tests the site on real screens and takes care of speed, accessibility and SEO. AI makes production faster, and experience decides whether the result works. We use AI throughout our process and still stand behind the quality ourselves.
Is an AI-built website GDPR compliant?
The platform may be, but the responsibility is yours. You need a privacy policy, a cookie banner that collects consent before non-essential cookies, and a data processing agreement with the platform if it processes personal data for you, for example from contact forms. Also check where data is stored and whether third-party apps from the platform’s marketplace pass data on. Many problems start when chat, analytics and marketing plugins are added without checking what they do.
Can we start with AI and upgrade later?
Yes, and it is often a sensible order for a brand-new business. Start with a simple AI site so you are visible and can test your messages. Keep your copy, images and notes on what customers ask about. Once you know what sells and the site needs to do more, all that material is gold for whoever builds the next version. Remember to plan redirects when you switch so you keep your rankings.
